Web monitoring

1. What is ISM?

ISM is a web site monitoring service that helps webmasters to ensure maximum performance on their web sites. ISM robots browses web sites with regular time intervals, in the same way a real user would do it. In case of service failure it can send an SMS o E-mail to an operator.

2. When does ISM report that a site is not available?

A website may be considered unavailable if:

- The page is not accessible.

- The site response time exceeds 20 seconds.

- The HTTP response code is 4XX or 5XX.

3. How do you define the "response time"? Do you download the entire site and count the time it takes to load it? Or do you just count the time the server takes to respond?

There are two kind of response time: the load time and the visual time. Both are referred to the time it takes to get a complete html result from the server. The load time indicates the time to download the html code, but it does not include images or any other resources which download together with it. The visual time corresponds to the complete download time, including both html and any other resource.

4. Can I stop monitoring during scheduled maintenance of my web site?

Yes, you can suspend the monitoring service and then activate it again when the maintenance task is finished. Calendars can be configured and tests execution scheduled, avoiding tests execution in known unavailability periods.

5. Can I monitor multiple web sites in a single test?

Yes, you can monitor several websites with a single test.

Alerts

1. How many e-mail and/or SMS will I receive when my site stops working?

If the site stops working, you will receive a 'DOWN' alert describing the failure reason. When the site is online again you will receive an 'UP' alert. While the site does not recover you will get 'REMINDER' alerts. The time between these alerts can be configured on the ISM alert system.

2. I have received an alert even though my site is working properly

You may have received the alert for the following reasons:

- Timeout error. Your site has not responded in more than 20 seconds.

- Web site unavailability for a short period of time, about 1 minute.

- Some site object is returning a 4XX or 5XX HTTP response code.

3. Does ISM support SMS alerts?

Yes, ISM is able to send both SMS and E-mail alerts.
